Plattsburgh, Potsdam advance to women's soccer semifinals

Potsdam (#3) and Plattsburgh (#4) blanked their opponents on their own campuses, Saturday in the first round of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) women's soccer championship and will advance to the semifinals on Wednesday.

Potsdam (14-3-1) defeated sixth-seeded Fredonia (7-11-1), 5-0, and will travel to play the second-seeded Cortland, Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Plattsburgh (13-5) outlasted fifth-seeded Oneonta (8-9-1), 1-0, to move on to play the top-seeded Geneseo, Wednesday at 2 p.m.

The Cardinals dominated the first half out-shooting the Red Dragons 12-4, with seven shots being on net.

Plattsburgh State continued to lead Oneonta in shots well into the second half recording 9 to their 4.

In the 68th minute Oneonta had a handball inside the box that led to a Cardinal penalty kick.

Senior defender Jessica Mangieri (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) stood one on one with the Red Dragon goalie in the 68th minute and booted the ball into the back of the net for another game-winner.

Graduate goalkeeper Taylor Adams (Schenectady, N.Y./Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) logged her eighth clean sheet of the seaon making four saves in the 90:00 she played. Junior goalkeeper Jolene Krom (Sidney, N.Y./Sidney) made 10 saves for Oneonta.

Potsdam freshman forward Mackenzie Bowie(Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) scored the first and last goals of the contest. Bears senior midfielder Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) scored a goal and added an assist to set the Potsdam goals record with 46. Potsdam's sophomore forward Lexi Dean (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) and senior forward Olivia Seamans (Bolton Landing, N.Y./Bolton) also scored. The victory was the Bears' first ever in the SUNYAC Playoffs and the program single-season record 14th.
 
Potsdam pressured the Blue Devils from the outset and jumped in front for good at the 9:55 mark. Potsdam freshman forward Kristina Sanchez (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) sent a corner kick into a crowd in front of the net and Bowie drove it home for the 1-0 lead. Almost four minutes later, Falsion buried her own rebound after a save from Fredonia sophomore goalie Abbey Monahan (Warsaw, N.Y./Warsaw). Dean assisted on the goal. The Bears outshot the Blue Devils 13-3 in the first half and took the two-goal advantage into the break.
 
At the 51:42 mark, Bears senior midfielder Rylie Murray (Berkley, Mich/Berkley) sent a free kick into the box and Dean headed it into the back of the net to start another big offensive half. In the 60th minute, Seamans scored from point blank range off a cross from Falsion to make it 4-0. With just five seconds left, senior midfielder Sarah Erno (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) chipped the ball ahead and Bowie buried it to put the game away.
 
Bears junior goalie Delphine Léonard (Anjou, Quebec/Dawson College Prep) made three saves at 85:37 to earn her 14th career victory. The win ties Léonard for fourth on the program's wins list. Senior goalie Karlee Burdick (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) preserved the shutout in the final 4:23.
 
Monahan made eight saves and allowed four goals in the first 73:12. Fredonia senior keeper Kendall Owczarzak (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) allowed a goal and made two saves in the last 16:48.
 
Potsdam finished with a 26-5 advantage in shots and a 10-0 edge in corner kicks.
