2021 SUNYAC Field Hockey All-Conference Released

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has announced its 2021 field hockey All-Conference teams and individual awards as voted on by the conference coaches. This year Cortland's Keirra Ettere has been named both the Offensive Player of the Year and the Rookie of the Year. Jessica Ascencao from New Paltz was named the Defensive Player of the Year. The Coaching Staff of the Year was awarded to New Paltz.

Offensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year - Keirra Ettere, Cortland

Keirra set Cortland's school record for most points in a season by a freshmen scoring a point in every game she played so far this season. She also leads the conference with 58 points (25 goals, 8 assists) and seven game-winning goals in 17 games played. Ettere helped lead Cortland to a No. 2 seed after regular season play (5-1) and then the team advanced the SUNYAC championship game. Although they fell short, 1-0, to New Paltz Ettere was named to the All-Tournament team and the Red Dragons earned an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament. Cortland will host Ohio Wesleyan in the first round Wednesday, November 10.

Defensive Player of the Year - Jessica Ascencao, New Paltz

Ascencao leads the league with 13 assists and is second with eight defensive saves so far this season. She leads a defense that has allowed their opponents an average of just 1.11 goals per game. The senior from Mohegan Lake, N.Y. was named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament team after the Hawks won the 2021 championship. Ascencao and her team will host Wilson College in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Wednesday.

Coaching Staff of the Year - New Paltz

Head Coach Shanna Szablinski is assisted by Sara Knickerbocker, Sarah Swift and Rachel Beam. The Hawks staff led their team to a No. 1 seed after finishing the regular-season undefeated, 6-0, in conference play. The team went on to win the 2021 field hockey conference title for the sixth time in program history, all under Szablinski's leadership. Five Hawks were named to the All-Conference team this season including the Defensive Player of the Year. New Paltz (16-2 overall) earned an automatic berth into the 2021 NCAA field hockey tournament and will face Wilson College in the first round on Wednesday, November 10 at home.
