Cortland Women's Lacrosse Advances to NCAA 2nd Round with 18-8 Win vs. W. Conn. St.

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally 16th-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team built a 9-0 lead after the first quarter and earned an 18-8 victory versus W. Conn. St. Saturday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Div. III Tournament at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons won their 15th straight game, improving to 16-4 on the season, and advanced to the second round to face Roger Williams, Sunday at 1 p.m. The Wolves' season ended at 15-5.

Senior Hannah Keech (Penn Yan/Penn Yan Academy) and sophomore Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) each surpassed 100 career points for the Red Dragons, becoming the 50th and 51st players in program history to reach the milestone. Keech led Cortland with four goals and now has 77 goals and 25 assists for 102 points. Cashman finished with one goal and one assist to improve her numbers to 75 goals and 26 assists for 101 points.

Graduate student Hannah Lorenzen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) tallied a game-high six points on two goals and four assists for the Red Dragons. Seniors Lauren Hopsicker (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and Katie Goodrich (Jordan/Jordan-Elbridge) each recorded two goals and an assist, while senior Amy Hoeffner (Bay Shore) also scored two goals. Juniors Madelyn Czyz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and Matisyn Schaut (Syracuse/West Genesee), sophomore Danielle Regan (Brewster) and freshmen Gabby Meager (Syracuse/West Genesee) and Eva Kloepfer (Syracuse/West Genesee) netted one goal apiece, and senior Shelby Meduski (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach) picked up an assist.

Graduate student Paige Potter (Cortland) made three saves in goal for Cortland. Czyz led the Red Dragons with seven draws controls as Cortland won 22 of the 30 in the game. Sophomore Julie Kadletz (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) secured four draws, while Cashman and Keech each won three draws.

Senior Dominique DeMarsico (Danbury, CT/New Fairfield) paced the Wolves' offense with three goals and an assist. Junior Colleen Foley (Kingston, MA/Silver Lake Regional) netted a pair of goals. Senior Katelyn Contreras (Danbury, CT) and sophomores Vicky Gracy (Bethel, CT) and Colleen Crotty (Peabody,MA/Peabody Veterans Memorial) tallied one goal apiece.

Junior goalie Anna Schipf (Babylon) turned aside seven shots and collected three ground balls for W. Conn. St. DeMarsico secured six draws, senior Katie Keane (Port Chester/Pleasantville) collected three ground balls, and junior Meghan Lorenzen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) caused two turnovers.

The Red Dragons wasted little time in taking control of the game, building a 5-0 lead just past the midway point of the first quarter as five different players scored. The advantage grew to 9-0 by the end of the quarter when Cortland added four goals in the final five minutes. Each team tallied three goals in the second quarter, and the Red Dragons led, 12-3, at the half.

Cortland increased its lead to 15-4 with 5:01 remaining in the third quarter as the balanced scoring continued. W. Conn. St. closed the gap to 15-6 heading into the final quarter with the final two goals of the third quarter. The Red Dragons closed the game by outscoring the Wolves, 3-2, in the fourth quarter for the 18-8 final.
