Meet track & field athletes Egypt Page and Chanyce Powell

CORTLAND, N.Y. - This week the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) presents Q&A's with Brockport's Egypt Page (Binghamton, N.Y.) and Chanyce Powell (Albion, N.Y.).

Page broke a 36-year old school record at the Brockport Season Opener meet in the long jump event with a distance of 7.30 meters. The previous indoor record of 7.23 meters was set back in 1983. His leap is currently ranked second on the indoor national qualifying list and won him first at the meet. Page also won the 60-meter dash with a personal best time of 7.05 in the event, which is also a top 20 mark on the indoor qualifying list.

Powell had a great start to the season at the Brockport Season Opener with a first place finish in the triple jump and second in the long jump. Her triple jump of 11.17 meters is currently 10th on the indoor national qualifying list and her long jump distance of 5.43 meters is sixth on the qualifying list.

Q&A:

1-Do you have a hidden or special talent?

Not really a hidden talent, but I can make people laugh without trying.

2-Do you have any pre-competition rituals?

I like to tune everyone out with music and do my little dance.

3-What's your favorite memory since competing for your institution?

My favorite memory on the Brockport Track & Field team would have to be me breaking the outdoor long jump school record and punching my ticket to nationals. Just because that was my vision since day one after missing an entire season. I was able to accomplish that goal.

4-If you could have one song play every time you score/get a hit/win a race what would it be?

Welcome to the Party- Pop Smoke

5-If you were stranded on an island, who would you want to be there with you, and why?

Kevin Hart, just because it would be the funniest thing ever. I can just imagine us trying to build a campfire.

6-What's the best advice anyone has given you?

To not be just another number in life. To be different from the rest of the pack. To exceed and break those expectations set for you.

7-What are some things you do to prepare for a game mentally?

To prepare for a meet mentally, I listen to a lot of music, but not just any music I have a certain playlist of songs that take me back to certain moments in my life. Whether it be good or bad moments in my life, it all motivates me.

8-Do you have a motto you live by or say to yourself on occasion?

My motto is that anything and everything is possible. Whatever you put out in the Universe, you will get back. With a little hard work of course. You will get what you desire. Even if people doubt your vision, that should just motivate you even more.

9-If you could pick one person in the entire world to be a spectator at all of your games who would it be and why?

My mom, just because she's been there since modified track & field. Just to see her and my family, motivates me even more and so she can see how far I've come.
