CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference has selected New Paltz's Jessica Ascencao (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.) and Cortland's Marisa D'Amico (Smithtown, N.Y.) as this week's PrestoSports Field Hockey Offensive and Defensive Athletes of the Week respectively.
Ascencao was the catalyst in a 6-1 win over Oswego State Sept. 28 for the Hawks. The sophomore was involved in five of New Paltz's six goals and was virtually unguardable in the win. She started her afternoon with the game's opening goal to put her team in front. After the Lakers tied it, she gave the Hawks the go-ahead score not long after. She then assisted Shannon Bernhardt to extend the lead to 3-1. She scored once more and assisted on another to end the evening with three goals and two assists. It was Ascencao's second career hat trick and her eight points ranked third all-time in single game program history.
D'Amico led the Red Dragons to a pair of overtime conference wins last week, posting a 2-0 record with a 0.98 GAA, 18 saves and a .900 save percentage. In a 2-1 home win versus Oneonta on Wednesday, D'Amico turned aside 11 shots. She then registered seven saves as Cortland defeated Brockport, 2-1, on Friday. For the season, D'AMico has a 7-2 record with a 1.34 GAA, 67 saves and an .848 save percentage.
