
SUNYAC RELEASES 2019 MEN'S SOCCER ANNUAL AWARDS
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State Univeristy of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) annouces the 2019 All-Conference teams as well as this season's Huntley Parker Offensive Player of the Year Award, Fred Holloway Defensive Player of the Year Award, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year, all voted on by the conference coaches.
Huntley Parker Offensive Player of the Year: Witman Hernandez, Oneonta
Witman Hernandez put together a strong season in his senior year totaling 23 goals in 19 games including 10 game-winning goals and he added 10 assists. Between his 23 goals and 10 assists, Hernandez was a participant in 63 percent of his teams goals this season. He is ranked No. 1 in the conference with a total of 56 points overall. Hernandez propelled his team to a 8-1 conference record to earn the first seed going into the SUNYAC tournament. The Red Dragons went on to win their 11th overall SUNYAC title and an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.
Fred Holloway Defensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year: Abdi Salim, Buffalo State
Abdi Salim earned two top conference awards as a freshman. He helped lead Buffalo State to a 6-3 regular season finish in the conference to earn the third seed going into the SUNYAC tournament. Salim's defense helped the Bengals hold their opponents to just 16 goals while his offense scored 54 goals in 19 games. Buffalo State also recorded two shutouts this season. The Bengals ended its season in the SUNYAC semifinals falling to the No. 2 Plattsburgh, 2-0. The team finished with a overall record of 15-4.
Coach of the Year: Iain Bryne, Oneonta
Iain Bryne led Oneonta to a 17-2 record so far this season and was 8-1 in regular season conference play which earned his team the the top seed going into playoffs. The only SUNYAC loss this season was in double overtime to Brockport, 3-2. Bryne and the Red Dragon's were leaders on both ends of the field in conference play ranking No. 1 in shots, goals scored, assists, shots per game, shots on goal, corner kicks and shutouts. Bryne and the Red Dragons also out scored their opponents 52-12 on the season overall. As the top seed, Oneonta earned a first round bye in the SUNYAC tournament and went on to beat Cortland, 2-0, in the semifinals and Plattsburgh, 1-0, in the championship game. With the conference title win, Oneonta advances to the 2019 NCAA men's soccer tournament and will play Babson in the first round on Saturday.
