Geneseo Leads Conference in Commissioner's Cup Standings After Winter Championships

Geneseo Leads Conference in Commissioner's Cup Standings After Winter Championships

CORTLAND, N.Y. - After the completion of the 2020 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) winter championships, Geneseo holds the lead in the Dr. Patrick R. Damore Commissioner's Cup standings with an average of 8.77 points. Cortland and Brockport follow behind Geneseo with an average of 7.61 and 7.05 points respectively.

The cup was named for Dr. Patrick R. Damore in 2012 when he retired as the SUNYAC Commissioner after serving in the position for 33 years.

Geneseo took home five of the seven winter championships this year winning men's ice hockey, men's and women's swimming and diving, and men's and women's indoor track and field. Geneseo has brought home the Dr. Patrick R. Damore Commissioner's Cup the past five years, which previously belonged to Cortland 17 out of the 18 years prior.

Cortland gathered key points over the winter season to hold the second place spot in the standings. The Red Dragons finished second in both the men's and women's swimming and diving championships. Cortland finished second in the men's indoor track and field championship meet while the women finished third. Cortland also earned points for its women's basketball team finishing the regular-season in second place.

Brockport gained significant points from winning the 2020 SUNYAC men's basketball championship while also placing second in women's indoor track and field and third in men's indoor track and field.

The Commissioner's Cup point system is determined by the 20 different conference sports in the fall, winter, and spring. A 10-point system is used in each sport. The first-place team gets 10 points, the second-place team gets 9 points and so on. A team's regular-season finish will be added to their post-season finish and divided by two for their final total for that sport. The total number of points that a school accumulates is divided by the number of conference sports it has. This school total determines the overall winner at the end of the school year.
