Geneseo and Cortland advance to SUNYAC field hockey championship

Full Field Hockey Championship Bracket

Geneseo (18-2) and Cortland (16-3) will play for the 2019 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) field hockey title, Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in Geneseo. The Knights will look to capture their third overall championship title and first since 2016 while the Red Dragons are playing for their 16th overall field hockey conference crown.

No. 2 Cortland defeated No. 3 New Paltz, 2-1, in double overtime while Geneseo topped No. 4 Oneonta, 5-1 Tuesday in the semifinals on campus. New Paltz ends its 2019 campaign 10-8 and Oneonta finishes 9-10 overall.

Geneseo senior back Julia Kim opened the scoring three minutes into the game on a low 10-yard shot to finish a penalty corner. Senior back Ariana Walczyk and junior midfielder Jordan Penkitis connected with passes to find Kim on the left side for the finish.

Eighteen minutes later, Clark received a short pass at midfield and ran through the Red Dragon defense to score on a shot between the Oneonta goalie's pads.

Geneseo scored twice in a 37-second span to build a 4-0 at the end of the second quarter. Oneonta sophomore goalie Kristy Campana made a diving save on a three-yard shot in front by first-year forward Maggie Phipps, but Clark lifted the rebound over her pads with 1:42 on the clock.

Then, senior forward Elisa Arcara dropped a pass in front of the Oneonta goal where junior midfielder Jordan Penkitis scored on a five-yard blast with 1:05 remaining in the half.

Kim scored in the fourth minute of the second half, carrying a ball from the top of the Oneonta zone through the defense to score on a short backhand outside the left post for a 5-0 lead that proved insurmountable.

More Details - New Paltz at Cortland

Cortland extended its school record with its ninth overtime game of the season, and the Red Dragons have won all nine of those contests. New Paltz, which also lost to Cortland in overtime in the regular season, wraps up the season with a 10-8 record. The Hawks were the defending league champion.

Cortland senior goalie Marisa D'Amico (Smithtown/Smithtown West) made 11 saves, including four in the first overtime period. New Paltz goalie Mackenzie Mortimer finished with 10 saves, including three in the fourth quarter. Cortland scored on its only shot of either overtime period.

Lily Fox (Northport) gave the host Red Dragons a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the game when she knocked in a rebound after Mortimer stopped a shot by Reardon. The Hawks tied the game with 30 seconds left in the first on a redirection by Natasia Plunkett on a ball hit by Jessica Ascencao.

Cortland had a prime opportunity to take the lead with less than two minutes left in the second quarter when the Red Dragons were awarded a penalty stroke, but Mortimer turned away the attempt to keep the game tied.

The winning goal resulted from a Cortland's first penalty corner of overtime. Reardon controlled the ball and sent a pass to Hannah Burchell (Whitney Point), who returned a pass to Reardon on the right side. Reardon dribbled into the circle and ripped a shot that deflected off a New Paltz defender's stick and went into the cage for her fourth goal of the season.

Cortland advances to the SUNYAC finals for the third straight year. The Red Dragons lost at New Paltz in last year's finals and beat New Paltz at home in the 2017 championship game.
