Geneseo and Brockport to play for 2019 SUNYAC volleyball title

No. 1 Geneseo (18-11) will face No. 2 Brockport (18-10) in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) women's volleyball championship, Saturday at 3 p.m. in Geneseo. The Knights will play for their first-ever conference crown while the Golden Eagles look to capture their eighth overall title.

Geneseo beat Oneonta, 3-1, (21-25, 25-15, 25-9, 25-22) and Brockport topped Cortland, 3-1, (27-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-20) Friday in the SUNYAC volleyball semifinals at Geneseo. Oneonta ends its season at 23-9 and Cortland finishes 24-11.

The Knights fell behind early in the first set, but sophomore middle Allison Wick capped a 4-0 run with a solo block to tie the game, 10-10. However, Oneonta closed the set on a 15-11 run to earn opening victory.

Geneseo fell behind, 6-3, to start the second set, but rallied to take an 11-9 lead. Oneonta tied the score with two straight points, but the Knights responded with a 10-1 run capped by seven-consecutive points on the serve of senior outside hitter Abby May, to forge a 21-12 lead that proved decisive.

Tied, 3-3, early in the third set, Geneseo used a 12-2 surge (including three kills by sophomore outside hitter Maddie McLaughlin) to build a 15-5 lead. The Knights finished the set with a 10-4 run while attacking at a .524 clip to build a 2-1 lead.

Geneseo started the fourth set with a 6-1 lead, but Oneonta battled back within one, 11-10. The Knights pulled away with an 8-4 spurt for a 19-14 lead that grew to five, 21-16. Oneonta got back within two, 23-21, but a service error followed by an attack error sealed the Geneseo win.

Brockport's energy was high from the start, setting the tone with two straight service aces in the first set by Ellen Paddock.

The Golden Eagles then commanded the scoring through the remainder of the set with help from Lindsey Luce, Mastro and Coyle.

Luce and Coyle then continued the momentum into the second set, leading the Golden Eagles on a five-point streak in the middle of the set to give them a seven-point lead, allowing them to maintain the lead through the remainder of the set.

The Green and Gold got off to an early lead in the third but with a little momentum from Red Dragons Maya Owens allowed them to close the gap. The two teams then battled back and forth for points, with the set ending in Cortland's favor.

In both the third and fourth set, the Golden Eagles put up a quick 3-0 lead.

Luce, Mastro and Elena Grossman provided the brick wall the Green and Gold needed on defense, recording 15 block assists between them. The three led the Golden Eagles to 10 total blocks on the night.

The Golden Eagles wrapped up a win over the Red Dragons with 52 total kills for a .172 hitting percentage.

Kerri McHale and Abbey Manning provided continuous strong opportunities for the Green and Gold middle and outside hitters, posting 22 and 19 assists a piece.

The SUNYAC Elite 20, an award modeled after the NCAA ELITE 90 program, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the conference championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The 2019 SUNYAC women's vollleyball Elite 20 is Oneonta senior Gillian Stieglitz (Montrose, N.Y.) who was honored Friday night.
