CORTLAND, N.Y. – The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) named Cortland's Anthony Ruggiero (Holtsville, N.Y.) and New Paltz's Luke Dole (Bethlehem, N.Y.) its PrestoSports Men's Soccer Offensive and Defensive Athletes of the Week respectively. This is the first SUNYAC men's soccer weekly honors of the 2019 season.
Ruggiero, the sophomore forward, helped lead the nationally 11th-ranked Red Dragons to a pair of home non-conference wins to open their season, netting three goals in the two games. In a 3-2 overtime win versus fourth-ranked Rochester on Friday, Ruggiero tallied two goals, scoring on a header in the 67th minute to give Cortland a 2-1 lead and ending the game with another header goal eight seconds before the end of overtime.
Dole, a defender, was named the Drew Fall Festival Defensive MVP this week. The senior captain helped lead the Hawks to two shutout victories in their opening weekend after defeating Stockton, 1-0, and host Drew University, 1-0. Dole also scored the game-winning goal against Drew off a header on a set piece. In addition, Dole was credited with an assist against Stockton and led his team with three shots on the weekend from the center back position.
