Geneseo Tops Commissioner's Cup Standings after Winter Championships

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Following the completion of the 2022 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) winter championships, Geneseo moved into the top spot in the Dr. Patrick R. Damore Commissioner's Cup standings with an average of 8.77 points. Cortland holds the second place spot with 8.52 points followed by New Paltz with 7.35 points.

The cup was named for Dr. Patrick R. Damore in 2012 when he retired as the SUNYAC Commissioner after serving in the position for 33 years.

Geneseo captured five winter championships this year earning the conference crown in men's ice hockey, men's and women's indoor track and field along with men's and women's swimming and diving. For five-straight years, Geneseo brought home the Dr. Patrick R. Damore Commissioner's Cup which previously belonged to Cortland for 11 years prior. There was no Commissioner's Cup in 2020-21 due to COVID-19.

Cortland gathered key points over the winter season to sit in the second place spot in the standings. The Red Dragons of Cortland finished second in women's basketball, men's and women's swimming and diving, and men's track and field this year. Cortland finished third at the women's track and field championship as well.

New Paltz gained 9.5  points for winning the programs third-straight SUNYAC women's basketball championship and the men's basketball team advanced to the semifinals adding 7.25 points. The Hawks' men's swimming and diving team finished third at the SUNYAC championship meet and the women were fourth helping New Paltz to finish the season third in the Commissioner's Cup standings.

The final SUNYAC Patrick R. Damore Commissioner's Cup standings will be released in May after the spring championships.

The Commissioner's Cup point system is determined by the 20 different conference sports in the fall, winter, and spring. A 10-point system is used in each sport. The first-place team gets 10 points, the second-place team gets 9 points, and so on. A team's regular-season finish will be added to their post-season finish and divided by two for their final total for that sport. The total number of points that a school accumulates is divided by the number of conference sports it has. This school total determines the overall winner at the end of the school year.
