Oswego Men's Basketball Moves On To Round of 32!

SWARTHMORE, P.A. – The Oswego State Men's Basketball team defeated the 20-6 Blazers of Hood College this afternoon to move on to the Round of 32 in the NCAA Championship tournament. Jamal Achille led the way with a double-double including 20 points, 12 rebounds, two steals and two assists. Following Achille was Devin Green with 17 points, seven rebounds, four assists and Jeremiah Sparks with ten points, five rebounds and three assists. The Lakers will take on the winner of Swarthmore College and Keene State tomorrow at 5:35 at Swarthmore College.

HOW IT HAPPENED

 

1st Half

  • After a Devin Green three-pointer to start the first round of NCAA Tournament play, Hood College went on a 6-0 run, giving them the 6-3 lead. 
  • Chritian Simmons cut the lead to one point with two made free throws at 16:26. 
  • In just thirty six seconds, Oswegos' Sparks and Green dropped a pair of three's, cutting the Blazers lead to one. 
  • From 14:11-12:02, the game was scoreless. At 11:56 Hood took the six point lead (19-13). 
  • In a huge offensive effort by the Lakers, in the last nine minutes of the half, the green and gold went on an 18-2 run. This run included six points from Achille, five from Green, four from Ahkee Anderson and a three-pointer from Sparks.

2nd Half

  • The second half began with back and forth offensive scores, at 17:46 the Lakers made it a seven point game (40-33). 
  • After a three-pointer made by Simmons, the Lakers went on a 10-5 run from 16:10-13:48, extending their lead to ten points (50-40). Crittendon and Green both added another three to the stat sheet during the run. 
  • Hood then scored five straight points cutting the lead to five, then cut the lead to four after a three-pointer at 11:39. 
  • Directly after the Blazers' leading scorer Evan Wang was subbed out, the Lakers went on a HUGE 14-2 run. 
  • This run lasted from 11:04-7:44 starting with Achille and ending with a good layup by Sparks, this gave the Lakers their largest lead of the contest at 16 points. 
  • Just after this run, Hood went on a 9-2 run of their own. This cut their lead to nine points with 6:13 remaining. 
  • The Lakers did not let up as they continued their relentless offensive and defensive pressure.
  • At a crucial moment in the contest, Achille extended the lead once again for the Lakers to 12 points (75-63). 
  • With the Blazers holding the ball, Sparks came up with a HUGE block with 2:21 remaining, extinguishing any comeback that remained at large for Hood College.  
  • The Hood College Blazers did not give up as the Lakers scored 10 to the Blazers' seven in the final two minutes of the contest. 
  • The Blazers did not lead once in the second half of the contest.
  • Brendan Mulson added nine points, three rebounds and shot 60% from the field. 
  • Julien Crittendon also added nine. 
  • Christian Simmons scored eight with five rebounds and went 4-4 from the free throw line.
