SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has picked New Paltz's Kenneth Roby and Cortland's Braden Melveney as the first 2021 PrestoSports Men's Soccer Athletes of the Week.
Roby scored five goals in three games for the Hawks. He opened up the season with three goals against Union to propel New Paltz to a three-goal shutout victory. He backed up that performance with two more goals in a 4-0 rout of Drew University Sunday. He totaled six shots over the weekend, all on target, scoring five of six attempts, including a successful penalty kick against the Dutchmen Thursday to notch his first career hat-trick.
Melveney posted a 1-1-1 record with a 0.62 GAA, 11 saves, an .846 save percentage and one shutout last week for the Red Dragons. In a 1-0 setback at Rochester on Wednesday, Melveney stopped three shots, including a second-half penalty kick to keep the game scoreless. On Saturday, he turned aside four shots in a 0-0 double-overtime home tie versus Stevens. Melveney finished off the week with four saves as the Red Dragons defeated Merchant Marine, 4-1, at home on Sunday.
