SCRANTON, P.A. - The SUNY Geneseo Women's Soccer team had its season come to a close on Sunday afternoon as they fell in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to Scranton, 1-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Knights struggled to possess the ball early on as the Royals came out of the gate playing physical and aggressive, but Geneseo was able to weather the storm and enter halftime tied at 0-0. Highlighting the Knights first half was a great clear along the goal line by senior defensive back Mackenzie Griffin.
- Geneseo came out stronger in the second half of action and saw a couple opportunities to take the lead, but was unable to convert. Sophomore forward Liv Raucci recorded two shots on goal and senior forward Hannah Sullivan played a great ball inside the box to sophomore forward Juliette Frischmann, but strong defense from Scranton kept them off the scoreboard.
- Junior goalkeeper Angel Bennett made multiple diving saves in the second half, but the Royals were finally able to break through in the 83rd minute to score and take the lead.
QUICK FACTS
- Bennett tallied seven saves in goal for Geneseo.
- Prior to the 1-0 defeat to the Royals, the Knights were 2-1 all-time in the second round of the NCAA tournament, with wins in 2017 and 1994.
- Geneseo finished the season with under 10 goals allowed over the course of 20 games for a goals against average of 0.44.
