2021 SUNYAC Women's Cross Country Awards Released

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has announced its 2021 women's cross country annual awards as voted on by the conference coaches. Geneseo's Kathleen McCarey was named the Runner of the Year while teammate Penelope Greene was honored as the Rookie of the Year. Geneseo was voted Coaching Staff of the Year.

Runner of the Year - Kathleen McCarey, Geneseo

McCarey was the 2021 SUNYAC champion finishing the 6k course in a time of 23:57.8 which placed her on the All-Conference first team and she was inducted into the league's Cross Country Championship Hall of Fame. McCarey finished second at the Niagara Region championship with a time of 22:12.0 and went on to earn All-America honors at the NCAA championship finishing 14th with a time of 21:19.3.

Rookie of the Year - Penelope Greene, Geneseo

In her first year running for Geneseo, Greene finished in third place at the SUNYAC championship (24:45.3) which earned her a spot on the All-Conference first team and she was inducted into the conference's Championship Hall of Fame. She also finished third at the Niagara Region championship and went on to the NCAA's where she finished 44th in a time of 21:52.8.

Coaching Staff of the Year - Geneseo

Geneseo's head coach, Dan Moore is assisted by Chris Popovici and Ashton Fischer. The staff led their team to the program's 10th straight and 20th overall SUNYAC women's cross country title. The Knights were the first four athletes across the finish line at the championship and had six others in the top 15. In addition, three athletes were inducted into the SUNYAC Championship Hall of Fame. In 2021, the coaches guided two All-Americans (14th and 22nd at the NCAA's) and the team finished in third place overall at the NCAA's - the program's best result since the 2016 season, where they also finished third.
