Former SUNY Cortland NCAA track and field champion Jack Flood '18 has earned a spot on TEAM USA for the 2022 Thorpe Cup, to be held July 9-10 at St. Mark's School of Texas in Dallas. The Thorpe Cup is an international decathlon and heptathlon competition between the USA and Germany.
The competition begins each day at 10 a.m. Central (11 a.m. Eastern). Each team consists of up to seven men and seven women who will earn points based on their performances in each of the events in the decathlon (men) and heptathlon (women). The top five men's and top three women's scores are added together to determine the overall men's and women's team winners. The decathlon consists of the 100-meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400-meter dash, 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500-meter run.
The competition can be viewed via a subscription-based video service on USATF.TV.
Flood won both NCAA Division III heptathlon (indoors) and decathlon (outdoors) titles during his senior track and field season in 2017. He set school and State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) records in both events, scoring 5,247 points to win the heptathlon crown and scoring 7,021 points in the decathlon during the season (he tallied 6,998 points at nationals).
The Blue Point, N.Y., native has since competed in the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials, where he finished in ninth place with a score of 8,036 points, just two shy of his all-time best score a month earlier when he won the Mount Olive First Chance and Multi meet in North Carolina.
