MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - SUNY Geneseo graduate student Hannah Marafioti scored three goals and added an assist but it wasn't enough for the #23 Knights as they fell to host #2 Middlebury, 22-6, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Geneseo jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Hannah Marafioti scooped up a loose ball near the crease and quickly slotted it home in a man-down situation in the first three minutes of the game. Middlebury responded with three-straight goals before Marafioti added her second of the day, scoring on a free-position shot. The Panthers tallied one more before the end of the period as the Knights trailed, 4-2, after the first quarter.
- In the first minute of the second quarter, Marafioti found first-year Molly Brown with an incisive pass that opened Brown for a quick shot which she deposited just under the crossbar to cut the lead, 4-3. After a pair of Middlebury goals, Marafioti scored her third of the day to make it 6-4. The Panthers tallied three-straight scores before first-year Madelynn Brown found the net with just over a minute remaining. The Knights went into the halftime break trailing, 9-5.
- Middlebury outscored Geneseo, 13-1, in the second half. Senior midfielder Emma Gaenzle netted the Knights only second-half goal as the host Panthers closed out the victory, ending Geneseo's postseason run.
QUICK FACTS
- The Knights finish the season with a 15-4 record, the second-most wins in a season in program history, topped only by the 2014 squad that finished 17-3.
- Marafioti ends her career as the most prolific offensive playmaker in Geneseo program history, tallying 211 career goals and 103 career assists for 314 career points. She ranks fifth in NCAA Division III among active players in career points and 15th among active career players at all levels of NCAA Women's Lacrosse.
- The Geneseo Women's Lacrosse Class of 2022 graduates after accumulating 39 victories in four seasons (including the COVID-19 shortened 2020 campaign) and helped the Knights back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2014, ending an eight-year drought. Seniors Jackie Blazejeski, Victoria Cacioppo, Madison Fennell, Emma Gaenzle, Colleen Kennedy, Maura McCabe, Margaret Rosaschi, April Rowell and Isabelle Sarle along with junior Lindsey Isenberg and fifth-years Hannah Marafioti and Megan Henderson will graduate this spring.
