
Oswego Baseball Set For Super Regionals Heavyweight Tilt

MARIETTA, OH – The Oswego State Lakers Baseball team after going 4-1 in the Glenside, Pa regional are now heading to Marietta, Ohio to take on the Marietta Pioneers. The Lakers come into the Super Regionals with a record of 33-11.
About The Marietta Pioneers:
The Pioneers have an overall record of 41-5 and finished their 2022 campaign with a record of 13-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Pioneers are 19-3 at home and 11-0 in away games.
In the NCAA Regional round the Pioneers went 3-0 defeating Kalamazoo College (27-13) by a score of 9-7 in their first game. Marietta went on to defeat Christopher Newport University (27-14) by a score of 14-5 and 7-2 to win their regional.
The Pioneers are no stranger to the postseason as they have earned 23 regional championships. This is their first regional championship since 2012, however.
The Pioneers are led by Turner Hill and Damian Yenzi on the offensive, Marietta is led on the mound by Sam Mathews.
Yenzi just behind Hill has a collective batting average of .428. In 194 at bats Yenzi has 83 hits, 70 runs, 28 doubles, one triple and 12 homeruns while earning 65 RBI's.
Hill posts a batting average of .443, the Marietta native has 82 hits in 185 at bats this season. Hill has 17 doubles, two triples, one homerun and has collected 48 RBI's.
The pitching staff is led by the Senior out of Fairfield, Ohio Sam Mathews. Mathews in his senior campaign has appeared in 26 games, starting in zero. With 74.1 innings pitched for the reliever/closer, Mathews has an earned run average of 1.33 while collecting a 5-0 record with 13 saves for the Pioneers. In 259 faced batters, Mathews has given up nine doubles, one triple and one homerun while collecting 68 strikeouts.
This marks the first year since 2012 that the Pioneers have won their regional bracket. 2012 was also the year Marietta won the NCAA World Series. In Marietta's last NCAA appearance the Pioneers' season was ended by Rowan University, losing by scores of 2-0 and 9-8 (10 innings).

This season the Lakers have an overall record of 33-11 and a record of 16-2 in the SUNYAC Conference. Oswego State posted a home record of 6-5, an away record of 14-4 and a 13-2 neutral site record.
This season Oswego State has nationally ranked victories over #1 Salisbury, #5 SUNY Cortland, #11 Rowan, #13 Johns Hopkins University, #18 Shenandoah and #22 SUNY Brockport. All of the victories against these teams amounted to nine total wins over top-25 teams, five teams of which are ranked at the end of the regular season. This past weekend the Lakers added two more nationally ranked wins against the Knights of Arcadia in the Regional round of the NCAA tournament.
Oswego had quite a journey in Glenside, Pennsylvania. Between broken down buses, rain delays, darkness postponements and even tornado warnings as the Lakers came out of Pennsylvania with the regional crown.
Oswego handled the Elizabethtown Blue Jays by a score of 8-2 in their first game, this came after nearly a three-hour rain and lightning delay. With this win the Lakers moved on to the winners bracket with host institution Arcadia.
The Knights got the upper hand on the Lakers, handing them their first loss in the tournament, 10-7.Oswego then moved on in an elimination game against the Husson Eagles. Oswego handled their business against the Eagles with a victory by a score of 12-10, this win came on Sunday where in theory the Lakers would have to play 20 innings of baseball to be named the regional winner.
The Husson game was cut short due to weather and fear that darkness would set in after a weather delay, the Lakers picked up on Sunday fully prepared to grind out 20 innings of baseball with a whatever it takes attitude.
Oswego took down the Knights with confidence in the Lakers second elimination game, taking them to game seven of the tournament. With clouds rolling in and the inevitable being another postponement, the Lakers and Knights picked up on Monday morning with the Lakers leading 4-1 in the top of the fifth inning with help from Ryan Weiss' first inning three-run homerun. The first four innings proved to be a much different game than the final five. Anthony Van Fossen came in to relieve Thomas Pecchia after the postponement the next day, throwing five innings with no hits and the Lakers were crowned the Glenside Regional Championship.
The Lakers are led by offense from Paul Tammaro, Lukas Olsson, Ryan Enos and Kyle Lauria.
Oswego State is led on the mound by Kieran Finnegan, Jacob Sanders, Thomas Pecchia and Anthony Van Fossen. Between these four pitchers the Lakers are 24-2.
Tammaro .464 with 78 hits in 172 at bats. This batting average is good enough for 14th in the nation, as a leadoff hitter, the Riverdale, New Jersey native has done nothing short of his job with an On-base percentage of .536.
Olsson has been on a tear for the Lakers. Olsson has 10 homeruns, 51 RBI's and 36 runs scored. Olsson has a batting average of .357, in 129 at bats. The Bayport, N.Y. native has an on-base percentage of .485, a slugging percentage of .690, 25 base on balls, Olsson has stolen 14 bases for the Lakers in 17 attempts and has 89 total bases.
Enos has a team-leading batting average of .461 which is good enough for 12th in the country. Enos leads the team in doubles (19), slugging percentage (.792), hit by pitches (21), on-base percentage (.573) and is first in RBI's (58), second in runs (63), second in hits (71), tied for first in homeruns (10) and is first on the Lakers squad in total bases with 122.
Lauria leads the Lakers in triples (3), walks (28), second in at bats (163), RBI's (52) and third in runs (51), hits (50) and doubles (12).
Finnegan leads the Lakers on the mound with 72.0 innings pitched, an ERA of 3.00, 57 strikeouts, 288 batters faced, and allowing 24 earned runs. Finnegan boasts a 7-1 record for the Green and Gold.
Sanders is 7-0 with 40.2 innings pitched, and ERA of 4.20, 29 strikeouts, 148 batters faced, and has only allowed 19 earned runs.
Pecchia is 5-0 with 44.0 innings pitched, an ERA of 2.45, 163 batters faced, and has only allowed 12 earned runs.
Van Fossen is 5-1 with 65.0 innings pitched, 42 strikeouts, 253 batters faced, and has an ERA of 5.12.
This is the first time ever the Lakers will have played in a super regional. In 2018 the Lakers played in only a regional round, then moved on to the World Series.

Tickets will have to be purchased on a by game basis. Therefore every game must be purchased separately. Fans will be asked to exit the stadium to purchase a new ticket for game three.
