SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announces its 2022 women's tennis annual awards including the Peter J. Cahill Most Valuable Player, Doubles Team of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year and All-Conference teams as voted on by the conference coaches.
Peter J. Cahill Most Valuable Player - Trinity Chow, New Paltz
Chow was named to the 2022 SUNYAC All-Conference first team for singles and doubles after going undefeated in conference play. This is the fourth season that Chow has been honored with the Peter J. Cahill MVP award. She also earned a pair of SUNYAC Athlete of the Week honors this season. Chow was named to both the 2022 singles and doubles all-tournament teams after going unbeaten in the SUNYAC tournament.
Peter J. Cahill taught and coached at SUNY Cortland for 30 years until his retirement in 2002. He passed away on Nov. 17, 2006. In 1998, he became the women's tennis coach at Cortland and promptly won five of next seven SUNYAC Championships while posting an impressive 59-29 record. Cahill was selected SUNYAC Women's Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2005.
Doubles Team of the Year - Trinity Chow and Tatiana Barnett, New Paltz
Chow and Barnett were 6-1 in conference play at first singles this season. The team went undefeated against Cortland and Oneonta in the SUNYAC tournament. The Hawks fell short of winning their fourth-straight conference title after losing to Oneonta, 5-4.
Rookie of the Year - Julia Holtermann, Oneonta
In her first season with the Red Dragons, Holtermann was a key component in securing the first-ever SUNYAC championship crown for Oneonta. Holtermann was named SUNYAC Athlete of the Week this season as well after a pair of victories versus Oswego and Wilkes University. This season Holtermann was undefeated in conference play in singles and doubles.
Co-Coach of the Year- Lonnie Mitchel, Oneonta
Mitchel is in his 10th season as head coach for the Oneonta women's tennis program. The Red Dragons lead the conference with a 17-6 overall record and they secured the programs first-ever SUNYAC championship title as the No. 2 seed. Under the leadership of Mitchel, the Red Dragons were able to beat the defending champions, New Paltz, 5-4 in the championship match. Oneonta had four individuals and one doubles team named to the All-Tournament Team. The Red Dragons will automatically enter the NCAA Division III tournament playing in the first round on May 9.
Co-Coach of the Year - Rob Bruley, New Paltz
In his 24th year as the head coach, Bruley led his team to be a contender for the 2022 championship crown. The Hawks defeated No. 4 Cortland, 5-0, Friday in the semifinal which advanced them into the final against Oneonta. Hoping to secure the fourth-straight SUNYAC championship title, the Hawks fell short to the Red Dragons, 5-4. New Paltz finished their season with a 12-5-1 overall record.
