Men's Ice Hockey Earn First Round Bye in NCAA Tournament, Face Winner of Babson and Trinity

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo Men's Ice Hockey team will receive a bye into the quarterfinal and host the winner of Trinity (Conn.) and Babson on Saturday, March 19 in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Tournament.

Geneseo defeated Oswego, 6-1, on Saturday night to earn the SUNYAC Championship and the automatic-qualifying bid to the NCAA Tournament. Senior forward Dan Bosio was named the SUNYAC Tournament MVP after scoring two goals in the SUNYAC Semifinal victory over Brockport and two more against Oswego in the finals. Senior defenseman Chris Perna and junior goalkeeper Matt Petizian joined Bosio on the All-Tournament Team as the Knights earned their fourth-straight conference championships. The Knights enter the NCAA Tournament as the third overall seed with a 22-3-1 record, including a 12-2-1 mark in SUNYAC regular season play. Geneseo earned a 3-0 victory over host Utica (Nov. 27) and fell to Elmira, 4-3 (Dec. 11), to post a 1-1 mark against tournament qualifying teams. 

Trinity earned an automatic-qualifying bid after defeating Colby in the NESCAC Championship, 4-1. The Bantams finished the season with a 17-7-1 mark, including a 12-5-1 record in NESCAC play. They own a 1-1 mark against NCAA Tournament teams this season, falling to Adrian, 1-0, on November 28 before defeating Hobart, 4-3, on December 11. 

Babson earned an automatic-qualifying bid as well, defeating Skidmore, 5-3, in the NEHC Championship on Saturday. The Beavers finished with a 19-5-2 record and a 11-5-2 mark in NEHC regular season play. The squad defeated Plymouth State, 2-1, on October 30, swept the two-game season series against conference foe Hobart and defeated Elmira twice in three meetings to close the year with a 5-1 record against NCAA Tournament teams. 

Babson and Trinity are set to face off on Saturday, March 12 at 7:00 p.m. at Babson. The winner of the Bantams and Beavers will then travel to Geneseo to face the Knights on Saturday, March 19 in the quarterfinal round with the winner advancing to the 2022 Frozen Four in Lake Placid, N.Y. on March 25 and 26.
