SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) is pleased to announce that Cortland senior Hannah Southcott has been selected the 2021 Women's Volleyball Scholar Athlete of the Year. During each season, the conference honors student-athletes for their efforts in their sport, as well as their academics. Out of hundreds of fall athletes, one athlete from each sport was selected for this distinction.
Southcott, a speech and hearing science major with a 3.91 GPA, was the 2021 SUNYAC Women's Volleyball Player of the Year. She was also on the SUNYAC All-Tournament Team after helping the Red Dragons captured the conference crown for the 20th time overall and first time since 2012. Southcott was honored as an All-American Honorable Mention, was on the First-Team All-Region and earned CoSIDA Academic All-District. This season she totaled 385 kills (including 22 double-figure kill matches), had a .270 attack percentage and tallied 271 digs in 100 sets. After winning the conference championship, Southcott and her team advanced to the NCAA Division III tournament second round.
In order to be eligible for the SUNYAC Scholar Athlete of the Year award student-athletes must prove both academic and athletic excellence by obtaining a minimum 3.30 overall GPA, be a starter or significant reserve for their team, and be at least a sophomore. The SUNYAC Scholar Athlete Award began in 2016-17.
