SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) awards Jackie Rometo of New Paltz and Lauren Kersch of Geneseo as PrestoSports Softball Athlete and Pitcher of the Week.
Rometo was a standout for the Hawks this past week. As the team's lead-off hitter she had at least one hit in each of New Paltz's six games, including multi-hit games against St. Joseph's-LI and Potsdam. In a doubleheader against the Eagles, Rometo helped her team to a sweep after going 4-for-7 with four runs and three extra base hits with three RBI and a stolen base, including going 3-for-4 with three runs scored, an RBI and a double in a 13-1 win in game two. Against Plattsburgh, Rometo had two hits and another double, and exploded in a sweep over the Bears. She went 6-for-8 in the series with three runs, a walk and six RBI. In game two she went 4-for-5 with a double and five RBI to hit .800. Through six games this week she totaled 19 total bases and six extra base hits with just two strikeouts in 22 at-bats, and finished with a slugging percentage of .864 and an on-base percentage at .560. She was moved to second base for the first time this week and produced a near perfect fielding percentage at .944 with six put-outs and 11 assists.
Kersch twirled a complete-game three-hitter to blank the Alfred Saxons on Wednesday and lead the Knights to a 1-0 victory. Kersch struck out four, allowing just three hits on the day. Kersch leads the SUNYAC with a 0.50 ERA over 28 innings pitched and ranks second in the league with four pitching victories (4-0).
